Casting call for play reading


Theatre Wakefield, is planning a staged reading of Vicki Williams’ play How Libby Got Married.

Audition Location: Wakefield Community Center (Lobby)

Rehearsal Location: Wakefield (exact location TBD)

Compensation: Theatre Wakefield is a community theatre company and does not pay its actors (but in other ways, you will become richer!)

KEY DATES Auditions: Saturday, January 4, 1pm-3pm

Rehearsal Dates (12 hours in total):

Sunday, January 12, 10am-4pm (lunch provided)

Sunday, January 19, 10am-4pm (lunch provided)

Performance Dates: As part of Theatre Wakefield’s New Works project and in collaboration with the 100 Mile Arts Network, this reading will tour to three different communities.

Friday, January 24, 7pm in Brennan’s Hill

Saturday, January 25, 2pm in Chelsea

Sunday, January 26, 2pm in Shawville

Actors must be able to commit to attending all rehearsals.

SYNOPSIS

How Libby Got Married is a play about the trials of a young woman in Victorian times trapped in one of the great storms in Canadian history, how she ties to navigate with her honour through the minefield of a male society.

CHARACTERS

Libby (25-35): A young woman whose act of kindness leads her imprisoned and struggling for independence.

George (30-40): A shy young farmer who is dominated by his mother, but struggles to find his way out of the confines of her disapproval.

Will (25-35): George’s younger brother, on the make, desperate to make his fortune away from home.

John (25-35): Mystery man, who is in love with Libby, trapped in the storm with her, sees himself as her protector.

Alonzo (25-35): British ne'er-do-well aristocrat, making his way through the uncivilized colony of Canada.

Agnes (55-65): Mother of George & Will, she is the picture of a busy-body, meddling social bastion of her community.

Andrew (50-60): Good-hearted Scotsman, who is a paragon of virtue & protector of the values of his society.
