BEING
A Ghost Story of Christmas
I HAVE endeavoured in this Ghostly little book, to raise the Ghost of an Idea, which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me. May it haunt their houses pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it.
Their faithful Friend and Servant,
C. D.
December, 1843.

A Christmas Carol is a short story by Charles Dickens, first published in 1843. The story tells of Ebenezer Scrooge’s ideological transformation after the supernatural visits of Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. It met with instant success and critical acclaim.

The book was written and published in the early Victorian era, when Britain was experiencing a nostalgic interest in its forgotten Christmas traditions, and at the time when new customs such as the Christmas tree and greeting cards were being introduced. Dickens’ sources for the tale appear to be many and varied but are principally the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and various Christmas stories and fairy tales. The tale has been viewed by critics as an indictment of 19th-century industrial capitalism.
It has been credited with restoring the holiday to one of merriment and festivity after a period of sobriety and sombreness. A Christmas Carol remains popular, has never been out of print, and has been adapted to film, stage, opera, and other media multiple times.

We’re very excited to be re-mounting our much-loved dramatic reading of A Christmas Carol at St. Andrew’s United Church on December 20 and 21 at 7 PM. Performances are acted out in costume, with performers reading from Robert Rooney’s script adaptation of the classic holiday tale. A choir and fiddlers will be accompanying the show.
